From renewable energy sourcing and water conservation to eco-design, product carbon footprint measurement, and sustainable packaging, ST is setting new benchmarks in semiconductor sustainability. In this candid Q&amp;A, Auteri explains how ST\u2019s technologies and corporate policies are not only reducing its environmental impact but also empowering customers and communities to accelerate their own sustainability goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-56426b00283a6278feeb2fab90d02e9d\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> STMicroelectronics began its sustainability efforts decades ago. How did this journey start?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our sustainability journey began over 30 years ago\u2014when the term wasn\u2019t even common. Back then, it was called \u201cenvironmental responsibility.\u201d We acted voluntarily, with no pressure from governments, and established internal rules to reduce our environmental impact. Over time, we introduced structured programs like our <strong>Product Stewardship<\/strong> initiative in 2011 and declared our <strong>carbon neutrality goal for 2027<\/strong> in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7da139601e891b964d96a6c017252cf1\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> What does ST\u2019s 2027 carbon neutrality commitment entail?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our commitment\u00a0covers all direct and indirect emissions (scopes 1 and 2), as well as product transportation, business travel, and employee commuting emissions (our scope 3 focus). In 2023, <strong>renewable sources provided 71% of the electricity we consumed<\/strong>, helping us avoid approximately <strong>636,000 metric tons of CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong>. By the end of 2024, <strong>84% of our electricity consumption came from renewable sources<\/strong>. A notable milestone is our <strong>15-year Power Purchase Agreement with TotalEnergies<\/strong> to supply 1.5 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity to our French operations, which began in January 2025. All of this supports our target of <strong>100% renewable energy by 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-92bc64864da7052f6363d72e246145bc\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> ST is known for its resource-efficient innovations. Can you tell us more?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Semiconductor manufacturing is water-intensive, so we focus on reduction, recycling, and smart metering. In India, for example, we deploy <strong>STM32-powered smart meters <\/strong>that <strong>detect inefficiencies, leakage, and wastage<\/strong>\u2014a key factor in water-stressed regions.. Across sites, we\u2019ve saved <strong>hundreds of thousands of cubic meters<\/strong> of water and increased the recycled water percentage. <strong>In 2024, ST recycled 54% of its total water consumption,<\/strong> and investing in water-saving projects continues to be a priority. Energy-wise, we design microcontrollers like <strong>STM32WL and U3 series<\/strong> with ultra-low power features to reduce consumption in end-use applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-87db30dec3e3286403f38e30e134f101\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> How does ST support customers in reducing their own emissions?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We go beyond our own footprint\u2014we focus on <strong>handprint<\/strong> too. We provide tools and calculators to help customers estimate <strong>induced and avoided emissions<\/strong>. For example, a fridge using our <strong>motor control solutions<\/strong> avoids CO\u2082 emissions equivalent to the absorption of <strong>169 trees<\/strong> over its lifetime. Our <strong>open eDesign suite<\/strong> enables engineers to simulate low-emission designs using our \u201cresponsible products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ead6ee5acb38aef25e36369e55030de8\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> What role does ST\u2019s technology play in high-demand applications like AI and servers?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>AI data centers are energy-intensive. ST\u2019s <strong>SiC and GaN power devices<\/strong> reduce <strong>standby power consumption<\/strong>, which is often higher than peak load. Our designs ensure efficient power delivery without compromising performance, and we extend this to <strong>wearables and IoT<\/strong>, enabling month-long operation on a single charge with ultra-low power MCUs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-67517128c5dfab619f1b102f9c80b436\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> How do you measure and communicate product sustainability?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All our semiconductors follow an <strong>eco-design framework<\/strong>. We perform <strong>cradle-to-gate LCA<\/strong>, and in some cases, <strong>cradle-to-grave<\/strong>. Customers can request a <strong>Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) report<\/strong>, which shows <strong>CO\u2082 equivalent per product unit<\/strong>. These PCFs improve as we <strong>scale renewable energy sourcing, increase energy efficiency, and enhance waste and water management<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-db3279cc0c672790f5cf7dc2d55146b5\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> What steps has ST taken toward sustainable packaging?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We use <strong>100% recyclable packaging<\/strong> made from natural fibers. These can be <strong>composted within six months<\/strong>. Beyond packaging, we\u2019re shifting from a <strong>linear economy to an open-loop circular economy<\/strong>, aiming to make waste a <strong>secondary raw material<\/strong>. Our packaging strategy reduces both <strong>Scope 3 emissions<\/strong> and costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e30ebfaca783d8cf2a6ac9a7d014ed6b\"><strong>Q:<\/strong> How does ST bring sustainability to the community level?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Through our <strong>STEM programs<\/strong>, we engage schools and universities, spreading sustainability awareness. We also collaborate on <strong>sustainable design projects<\/strong> with startups and customers. In India, we focus on <strong>smart metering<\/strong>, <strong>EV infrastructure<\/strong>, and <strong>energy-efficient appliances<\/strong>. <strong>Our smart metering solutions use ultra-low-power semiconductors that extend battery life, improve accuracy, and help utilities minimize water loss<\/strong>.
